the nothing

A performance piece woven out of music, myth, movement, and ritual and symbolic design.

This multi-disciplinary work takes inspiration from the writings of the South African born novelist Bessie Head, using music and dance to explore themes of exile, both physical and mental, while looking at the power of storytelling, its ability to create a world without boundaries, and as an important tool to keep African culture and heritage alive.

The project bring together in performance a group of dancers from Botswana and musicians from South Africa and the USA to create a dynamic new work

Script by Zakes Mda, music by Kyla-Rose Smith in collaboration with Daniel Hutchinson and Lukas Ligeti, with choreography by Luyanda Sidiya.

Premiering in 2016
